What does backwash filter mean?

A backwash filter is a water filter that has a backwash function for cleaning. The backwash replaces a time-consuming and expensive replacement of the filter candle .

During backwashing, the water is flushed through the water filter into the wastewater at full line pressure in the opposite direction of flow. During this process, the accumulated dirt particles are flushed out and the filter is cleaned in this way. The domestic water filter should be backwashed regularly. The backwash function can usually be carried out very easily using a tap on the water filter . The use of a technician is not necessary for this. It is recommended that this be done every 2 - 3 months, but at least once a year.

If you have a water softener from Alfiltra and have the water softener serviced by our customer service department, our technician will be happy to backwash the water filter for you.

How do you clean a backwash filter?

A backwash filter cleans itself through a special backwash mechanism. This process ensures that accumulated contaminants such as dirt particles, sand and rust are flushed out of the filter without the need to replace the filter cartridge frequently. Here is a step-by-step explanation of how cleaning a backwash filter works:

    1. Preparation

    • Manual or automatic activation: The backwash process can be activated manually by turning a valve or automatically by a timer or control unit.
    • Closing valves: If necessary, certain valves should be closed to prepare for the backwash process and ensure that the process runs correctly.

    2. Backwash process

    • Reversal of water flow: In backwash mode, the direction of water flow is reversed. The water flows from bottom to top through the filter insert, instead of from top to bottom as in normal operation.
    • Removal of contaminants: The reverse water flow loosens and rinses out the accumulated particles and contaminants that have become stuck in the filter insert.
    • Flushing out the contaminants: The dissolved contaminants are flushed into the drain, thereby cleaning the filter insert.

    3. Follow-up

    • Return to normal operation: After the backwash process is complete, the filter returns to normal operating mode by redirecting the water flow back to the original direction.
    • Inspection: It is checked whether the filter is working properly and whether there are no more contaminants in the water.

    Frequency of cleaning

The frequency of backwashing depends on the water quality and flow. Typically, backwashing occurs every few weeks to months for domestic applications. For commercial and industrial applications, the frequency may be higher.

    Advantages of backwash filter cleaning

    • Efficient self-cleaning: The filter insert does not need to be replaced regularly, which reduces maintenance costs and effort.
    • Durability: Regular backwashing ensures that the filter insert remains efficient and functional for longer.
    • Environmentally friendly: Less waste due to reduced need for replacement filters.
